Service Update: Global Google Cloud Platform Outage Affecting WeShip and Other Major Services
Date: Thursday, June 12, 2025

We detected starting at approximately 12:00 PM that Google Cloud Platform is experiencing a global outage impacting critical WeShip services. This outage also affects several well-known platforms such as Spotify, Google Meet, Google Nest, OpenAI, Etsy, IKEA, Shopify, among others.

At WeShip, we use multiple infrastructure providers, so the Google incident only impacts approximately 20% of our services.

  • What’s happening?
Google has reported a global outage across multiple regions, causing partial or total unavailability of infrastructure and APIs hosted on GCP. Public reports confirm simultaneous disruptions in various services.
  • Main impact on WeShip:
    • Delays or failures when updating order statuses and shipments.
    • Slower or failed label generation and automated notifications.
    • Intermittent experience when querying tracking metrics or integrating via our APIs.
  • Impact on other services (per public reports):
    • Interruptions or playback issues on Spotify.
    • Problems with video calls and meetings on Google Meet.
    • Erratic behavior in Google Nest device functionalities.
    • Limited access or response delays from OpenAI APIs.
    • Errors in e-commerce operations on platforms like Etsy and Shopify.
    • Potential disruptions in IKEA services relying on GCP.
    • And other consumer and enterprise services dependent on Google Cloud.
  • Actions WeShip is taking:
    • Real-time monitoring and direct communication with Google Cloud support for status updates.
    • Evaluating and activating contingency plans: rerouting critical workloads to alternate regions or services where feasible.
    • Strengthening our operations and support teams to address customer inquiries and specific incidents promptly.
  • Recommendations while the incident persists:
    • Monitor your order flows: if you see synchronization errors, retry later or contact support for assistance.
    • For non-urgent processes, consider postponing until the platform stabilizes.
    • Check our status page for real-time updates and estimated recovery times.
  • Next steps:
    • We’ll continue providing timely updates via email and our status page.
    • Once GCP services are restored, we will share a detailed post-mortem covering impact analysis and high-availability improvements.
    • We’ll reinforce internal measures to reduce risk from cloud provider outages and speed up recovery in future incidents.
